Actin Dynamics In Mitochondrial Function: Implications For Cellular Homeostasis And Disease.

Mitochondrial dynamics play a critical role in regulating mitochondrial homeostasis and cellular functions. While fission was known to occur at endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-mitochondria contact sites and require actin polymerisation, our recent work indicates that this also extends to fusion. Actin polymerisation is in fact a key regulatory step in the fusion process that is controlled by changes in the extracellular matrix. Overall, ER-mitochondria contact sites are emerging as a regulatory hub to control mitochondrial dynamics in response to metabolic changes and extracellular cues.
